Codefetch expands computer book market by connecting programmers and authors.
Portland, Oregon - August 1, 2005 - Computer book authors regularly publish new material, yet typically, old-fashioned book reviews and word-of-mouth are the means by which programmers discover their work. Codefetch.com is a new web search engine that instantly connects programmers and authors by finding code excerpts taken from published books. Software engineers and IT workers get the answers they need, and authors get exposure for their books.
Codefetch is designed to query computer code and displays it usefully formatted for the programmer. It knows the location of online help files for various computer languages and provides a link to just the right page of documentation for a given query.
Codefetch’s unique query system lets programmers ask questions just like they would using Google— by entering keywords separated by spaces. But it also lets them use a more powerful language called a regular expression search. The interface is uncluttered but allows searchers to winnow down their query intelligently.
By connecting programmers with the very books that answer their questions, Codefetch can operate without advertising-- relying instead on revenue from book sales and, eventually, access fees or micropayments for online documentation. Codefetch will expand the computer book market by allowing programmers to find niche books they wouldn’t have even known existed. A primary goal of Codefetch is to connect users of open-source software with books about those software products thus spurring the continuing development of documentation for open source software.
Codefetch opened to public beta testing on July 1, 2005 and supports 19 popular computer languages as of August 1st. The site operates on a small server farm co-located at EasyStreet Online Services. New languages are added monthly. Codefetch, Inc. was founded by Gregory Cosmo Haun, a software engineer, teacher, artist and author.
